How can the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres in the NLCS

National League postseason number five and number six will go head-to-head in the NLCS. The Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Diego Padres for the pennant isn’t what anyone imagined. That’s how things turned out, and all of Philadelphia is keen to get things moving and defeat a team that was little better than them in the regular season.
In a way, the Phillies and Padres are comparable teams. Each has a postseason rotation, with some great guns up front and questionable ones in the back. No bullpen is particularly good unless their wobbly closers are sharp — something the Phillies haven’t seen enough of Seranthony Dominguez and the Padres haven’t seen enough of Josh Hader.
The Phillies and Padres should make for an interesting NLCS. How does Philadelphia come out on top?
The Philadelphia Phillies can beat the Padres even with continued sloppy play
Although the Phillies are close to reaching the finals, they remain a sloppy baseball team. Defense hasn’t killed them this postseason, although in the one game they lost we all wish Rhys Hoskins could be the DH instead.
Philadelphia remains a flawed baseball team, but so are the Padres. None of their starting pitchers is scarier than what the Phillies can put on the mound. In the regular season, their bullpen combined with the third-worst WAR of any team in Major League Baseball. There are ways to beat the Padres late and that’s always important. It’s perhaps the best way to get the Padres — unless the Phillies can score early and often.
It’s not magic Philadelphia needs in the NLCS to beat San Diego. It’s important to thrash the starting pitchers early and get to a faulty bullpen in San Diego. It’s the same strategy the Padres should use to defeat the Phillies.
A big difference between these two teams is power. The Phillies have a lot of them. They haven’t even shown it to its full potential in the playoffs. Kyle Schwarber broke in while Bryce Harper provided her with most of her runs.
The Padres line-up is not a group of triple-A players. Trent Grisham was their top performer, but Aaron Nola’s brother Austin Nola hits tremendously well and there’s always a risk of Juan Soto, Josh Bell and others getting hot. Manny Machado is also never easy to come across.
San Diego has defeated the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers in back-to-back series. This is arguably an even tougher path than what the Philadelphia Phillies had when they faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves. This is a battle of underdog teams with big payrolls, good starting pitching, and two bullpens that can be blown to bits.
Even if it only matters in a single game whose bullpen prevails over the other, it could become the deciding factor in the end. Hit early, hit often and overtake Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove as quickly as possible. tire them out. Beat them as they can beat you.
