Naming contest launched for San Diego’s new mini street sweeper
San Diego launched a naming contest this week for the city’s newest quiet and environmentally friendly mini street sweeper.
Because the electric sweeper is smaller than other city sweepers, it’s more effective at picking up trash and debris from tight spaces like bike lanes, city officials said.
The new sweeper will be painted blue to match San Diego’s Think Blue movement and education program to raise public awareness of stormwater pollution and the need for street sweeping.
People can help choose a username on social media, including Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. They can also send suggestions to thinkblue@sandiego.gov.
On November 10, three potential names will be chosen from the suggestions, and the public will be able to vote until November 23, with the winner announced at the end of November.
City officials announced a plan this fall to raise the cost of street sweeping from $55 to $68 and improve street sweeping methods following a study that showed the system could be more effective.
