San Diego Helps Put a New Face on Small Businesses

The city of San Diego is offering thousands of dollars to some small businesses to help improve their operations.

The Storefront Improvement Program has helped many local businesses over the years and now officials are trying to get more operators to use the program.

The Olympic Café in North Park, which has been serving traditional Greek food for nearly forty years, has been in successful business.

“It’s just been a family game from the beginning,” said Nick Kostelas, owner of the Olympic Café. “My grandmother always passes by, all her fruits, my mother is always there, she does all the baking.”

When Kotselas and his family moved to their current location on University Avenue near Louisiana Street a few years ago, the outside of the house needed a big change. The previous tenants left a pale red stain outside.

“We repainted the whole house,” Kostelas said. “This cover was built. We redecorated the covered patio space.”

The repairs cost nearly $20,000. The city bill is $8,000.

The Olympic Café is considered one of the success stories in San Diego’s Storefront Improvement Program. The city hopes to serve as an example for other businesses and expand the program to other neighborhoods.

“It’s a win-win situation where the business owner has more resources to improve their store, but it’s also better for all the businesses around it and the people who live in the entire community,” the said Elizabeth Studebaker, assistant director for the city of San Diego’s Department of Economic Development.

According to Studebaker, the incentive to improve the stores was temporarily withdrawn at the height of the coronavirus pandemic. But now, San Diego can offer a lot of help to small businesses in traditionally underserved communities like Logan Heights, Lincoln Park and Encanto.

“If you’re in an economically or historically disadvantaged area that doesn’t have city resources, you can get $10,400 in reimbursements for the $16,000 spent,” Studebaker said.

The city is also offering free matching grants to award recipients. To qualify for the program, businesses must employ less than 25 people. Although not all the costs of the restoration were paid, it was a happy relief for Kostelas and his family.

“It’s a good thing for the neighborhood,” Kostelas said

San Diego allocates $200,000 a year for the Store Improvement Program. To apply, business owners can go here.
