Starting Saturday, kids get free admission to more than 50 museums in San Diego County
Starting Saturday, kids get in free at dozens of San Diego County museums and attractions during the month of October.
Hosted by the San Diego Museum Council and the San Diego Tourism Authority, the Kids Free San Diego program includes free admission for children 12 and under at more than 50 locations.
Last year, 30,000 children and 17,000 adults took part in the Kids Free programme. As the pandemic subsides and new museums take part this year, attendance is expected to increase. Kids Free San Diego’s goal is to eliminate the cost barrier for low-income residents. The program also supports museum entries during a traditionally slow period for tourism.
“With so much to see and do, San Diego is always a children’s paradise,” Bob Lehman, executive director of the San Diego Museum Council, said in a statement. “But in October, it gets even better with free kids.”
Participating museums this year include the recently reopened Mingei International Museum and the newly opened Comic-Con Museum, featuring “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing – The Exhibition.” Naval Science Center, Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, San Diego Maritime Museum, Music Making Museum, Pacific Southwest Railroad Museum, Irish Pool Museum, New Children’s Museum, San Diego Air & also participate. Space Museum, San Diego Botanical Garden, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, San Diego Model Railroad Museum and San Diego Museum of Natural History.
Participating museums are listed on the sandiegomuseumcouncil.org website. To take part, parents need to fill out a short form on the website and they will be sent a free coupon for children. Some museums offer free admission for two children with each paying adult, and some art museums offer free admission all year round.
In addition to the museums, several themed attractions in San Diego are offering children’s discounts in October. SeaWorld San Diego is offering children free admission with a paying adult to its Spooktacular Halloween dance party events on weekends through October. Details can be found on the Tourism Authority website at sandiego.org/promotions/kids-free.aspx.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Zoo continues to offer free admission for children 11 and under in October. Visit zoo.sandiegozoo.org.
